When a body falls, it’s a visible, undeniable thing. We can discuss the forces which lead to the fall, but we cannot deny the movement of descent. The other type of fall may be translucent, it may require moral judgement, it may get lost in misinterpretation. In FALL we witness the physical fall more immediately than the other kind – the former is tangible and earthly, the latter metaphorical and ethereal –, although no concrete border lines have been drawn. We all ‘fall in love’, just as we ‘fall down’, or we ‘fall to the ground’ at the end of our lives, in the same way that tree leaves ‘fall to the ground’ in the Fall.
This performance is all about the act of falling, be it deliberateor accidental. It results from a movement, not a concept. We allfall at different points in our lives, either because we’ve tripped, or we’ve been pushed, or we’ve lost our strength or consciousness, or we’ve fallen in love, or we’ve fallen into temptation, or because we’ve done wrong, or because we’ve died. FALL inhabits this space, this confusing intersection between what makes us fall, thus damning us, or what makes us fall, thus redeeming us.
